The Importance of Hurricane Preparedness

May is National Hurricane Preparedness Month in the United States. Most may look at the month of May and feel it’s too early to be talking about hurricanes. We’re here to tell you that it’s never too early to start preparing for severe storms.

Hurricanes not only bring extremely strong winds but they come with heavy rains that can cause a severe amount of flooding in just about any area. Flooding is the number one natural disaster in the United States so if you think you’re just preparing for one disaster, you’re really preparing for 2.

That is one of many reasons as to why it is paramount that you prepare for Hurricane Season as soon as possible. We have a few more reasons below.

Quick Deployment

By preparing for a hurricane early you are giving yourself time to become familiar with the wide array of products used to help protect your home against storm damage & flood damage. If you purchase new and innovative products it is important that you read up on the most effective ways to use them.

The more familiar you become with all of the products you purchase, the easier it will be when the time comes to deploy them and ensure that you have done it correctly.

A lot of people feel that they cannot prepare early because most products don’t store easily or have a significant shelf-life. The truth is there are a multitude of hurricane preparedness and flood control products that are easily stored and last for a significant amount of time. You can check out some of those products HERE

Knowledge Is Power

Hurricanes are not a finite kind of storm. There are many layers to a hurricane and those layers are described in categories. Check out the picture below identifying the differences in hurricane categories.

Know Your Hurricane Categories

Different categories of hurricanes require different levels of preparation. The higher the category of the incoming hurricane is the harder it will be to prepare on short notice. By preparing for a hurricane as early as possible you are able to stock up on products and research protection methods well before a theoretical category 4 or 5 storm hits your home or business.

It’s important to have supplies on hand and ready to deploy that can help combat any category of hurricane. Just because your location hasn’t dealt with a category 4 or 5 before doesn’t mean it can’t happen eventually. By preparing for the worst you’ll be set up for success.

The Mad Scramble & Availability

There is always a classic image or news story video that plays before every big hurricane where people are literally scrambling to stock up on supplies just days before a hurricane hits. The mad dash to every store imaginable in order to prepare for an incoming storm is both frustrating and overwhelming.

We understand that not EVERYTHING can be picked up for a hurricane months in advance (food). However, most supplies that will combat the flooding of a hurricane can be bought and stored as early as you’d like. We spoke to that earlier in this post with regards to product shelf life.

The more important factor is availability. Days and even sometimes one to two weeks before a storm the availability of storm protection products diminishes significantly. Many people will be clearing out the stores.

In today’s shopping world it’s easy to think that ordering all of your supplies on the Internet just days before will work out perfectly. The truth is that shipments are widely affected by potential storms and sometimes due to incoming severe weather shipments will be stopped.

In order to avoid this it’s much better to just prepare as much as you can as early as you can. You would much rather have the products months in advance waiting to be deployed than not have any products at all due to availability issues.

So like we said in the very beginning. We understand why people make think it’s a bit off to have Hurricane Preparedness Month in May when storms aren’t really on anyone’s radar yet (see what we did there). Yet, all the reasons above make sense as to why you should be preparing as soon as possible for this coming hurricane season. Experts are predicting an even more active season than last year.

Make sure to start your preparation today! That way you will be in the best possible position to succeed when it comes to protecting your home or business against a potential hurricane.
